REASONS DISCIPLINARY POLICY IS IMPORTANT
It is behavior that is judged by how well it follows a set of rules or orders.
Establishing disciplinary policy in the workplace is important because of the following:
- The employer has to exercise its management prerogative to make his business successful.
- It is one of the ways for the company to communicate its expectations, culture, values, mission, vision and goals.
- Since punishment for misconduct may not totally be avoided, the policy provides a consistent, fair and just system, treatment and handling of employees and employment issues
- This provides tools for management to make efficient decisions that are in accord with law, rules and procedure
- When such policy is set up, the company can be confident that its exercise is within the carefully established grounds. The exercise of employer’s prerogative should not result in crippling labor dispute
- The decision to discipline should be defensible in court
Due to highly litigious nature of employee discipline where workers can easily, and at a very minimal cost, sue the employer for any disciplinary act, employers have to consider fundamental and legal principles in crafting the codes and enforcement system.
Thus, careful consideration of the legal aspect of discipline is a must.
