While it is true that not making the cut does not define a person yet reality presents a frustrating scenario when one went through endless of lectures and readings and still did not obtain the results he wanted.
The truth is that no one is certain what is going to happen after completing the bar exam. It is downright foolish for one to say that he is 100% sure to pass the bar. I have not heard anyone say that during my time.
Quite on the contrary, those I thought would be performing well in the bar were so insecure that they felt they would fail. Well, probably some just wanted to have more reasons to put pressure on themselves to prepare further the reason they seem to shortchange themselves. But the perfect assurance was not the norm. At the end of the day, it is about adding more chances to hurdling the bar every day. The daily grind should stick each day to create a snowball of knowledge come exam time.
In my experience, focus and dedication were among the important traits that a bar examinee should possess to increase the chance of passing the bar. It is the grit and perseverance that fuel the engine of the bar hopeful.
I know a friend who could not seem to focus on what he was reading. He would open a page in his book, read a few lines, then fidget, pull out a pack of cigarette, and open the foil. My attention would get caught by the sound of “tap, tap, tap” coming from him since he was just seated across the table as he tried to dislodge a stick from the hole he tore through a pack of his cigarettes.
Then he would stand up, light up the thing, and walk away from his book to enjoy the smoke in his own contemplative moment—of course, away from his readings. Then he would go back to the book, read a few paragraphs and repeat the process. He just lacked the focus. He is smart and intelligent. But I believe he needed more than that to beat the bar.
Determination is another important character that a bar taker should possess. Disappointments, problems, and challenges abound. We are all just like normal people who face issues at home, work, and personal relationships. Sadly, they affect our preparation one way or another. While they may impact on the schedule and focus, it is the determination that keeps the examinee glued to his course.
I was working when I reviewed for the bar. I had been a working student when I studied law. Unlike my other working student friends I did not resign from work during the bar review period which was six months before the bar exam.
My decision to keep working was not due to confidence to pass the bar but of the possibility of failing the bar and being out of work at the same time. So I soldiered on spending hours in coffee shops after work reading my books since that was the only time that I have more generous hours in a day to read.
As mentioned in my book How to Pass the Bar Exams (While Working Full Time), I already arranged the books that I was going to read. There were more than eighty of them lined up against my wall. I had a schedule to read each until the bar week. After work, I already knew what book to study on.
The day after each Sunday of exam I would go to work and not talk about the bar exam. It was as if nothing happened. My co-workers did not even know what happened the day before. During lunch I would just read my books and then go back to work after an hour. I would continue where I left off after office hours.
With prayers, focus and determination, passing the bar with all these odds is also possible. Although it is still better if one is studying full time for the bar.
